11 Best things to see in Gran Canaria, Canary Island
Dec 25, 2023
Gran Canaria is the third largest and second most populous island of the Canary Islands. The ideal destination for hiking and stargazing. We visited this island in mid-April. The views all around are breathtaking and spectacular. We recommend to stop at safe places and get out of the car to fully enjoy the nature.
1. Breathtaking road to La Aldea de San Nicolás
On the first day, when we wanted to escape the traffic jams to get to one of the most beautiful and distinctly local villages on the island – La Aldea de San Nicolás. We decided to take a risk and drive through the middle of the island. It was a journey that we will never forget.
Our route led us from the Grand Canaria airport to the charming town of San Bartolomé de Tirajana along the GC-65 road, then we went to the northwest of the island for about 14 km along the GC-60 road. Then we turned to the road GC-606. This was the most impressive part of the road. Further along the GC-210 we reached the cosy town of La Aldea de San Nicolas de Tolentino.
The high and rocky cliffs of the island remained unnoticed. Because of this road, we began to understand why the island has such a name. The views all around are breathtaking and spectacular. We recommend to stop at safe places and get out of the car to fully enjoy the nature. Remember, drive slowly and carefully!
2. Tejeda: The Most Beautiful Village in Gran Canaria
If you want to escape from the tourist crowds, then go to the centre of the island. There you will find one of the most beautiful villages in Spain –Tejeda. Remember that the best time to visit Tejeda is in February, when the almond trees bloom all around the village. It is best to walk around the village, because then you can get to know the architecture of the white houses best. Be sure not to miss the traditional bakeries, where it is worth trying the local almond cuisine and the sweet bienmesabe.
3. Firgas: The balcony of the ocean
The city of Firgas, which is located in the mountainous area in the north of the island, is definitely characterised by water. In the heart of the old town, there are beautiful stairs which are a piece of art. One part is decorated with geographical representations of all the Canary Islands and the other part is like a magical waterfall flanked by 21 heraldic coats of arms which are representing all the municipalities of the Grand Canary Island. They are made with the typical Spanish original glazed tiles.
It is easy to walk to all the main viewpoints. Firgas is the smallest town in Gran Canaria, but everyone knows it well because it is popular for its drinking water Firgas, which can be bought in supermarkets all over the Canary Islands. This city is also called the balcony of the ocean, because it is possible to see the Atlantic Ocean from here. The urban environment is decorated with watercress, because it is a good growing environment for these flowers. There is even a restaurant where watercress is present in all the dishes.
4. La Aldea Beach: True nature and indescribable sunsets
Since we wanted to escape the tourist crowds and enjoy the local life, we stayed in La Aldea de San Nicolas de Tolentino for a week. It is away from the popular hotel complexes and big beaches. We discovered that not far from the house there is a beautiful beach with a small boat dock in the very north-west of the island. La Aldea beach surprised us with its clear blue water and its serenity. The beach is pebbly, but it won't stop you from relaxing. There are wooden platforms on the beach where you can rest safely, as well as stone tables and chairs, so you can create your own picnic spot. This place is unique with true nature and indescribable sunsets.
If you go to this beach and want to try the local cuisine, we can recommend Restaurante Grill Luis. It fills up quickly with locals during siesta, so get there early.
5. Puerto de Mogan: Feeling that you are in little Venice
If you like safe and calm beaches, colourful architecture and small canals, then definitely visit the charming village of Puerto de Mogan. Here you will be able to catch the feeling that you are in little Venice, because there are many beautiful bridges and boats all around. Here you can go on a trip with SUP boards, catamarans, jet skis and bananas boat and other attractions. Of course, there are also many different restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy delicious local cuisine.
6. Mirador del Molino: Feel the majesty of nature
Mirador del Molino is a great place to relax after driving the GC-210. A small car park with an old windmill at the end. The most remarkable is the view to the right of the water reservoir and the surrounding steep mountains.
Mostly the road to this viewpoint is very tortuous and the rocks are very close to the car. It's likely to make some drivers' palms sweat. If it is rainy weather, you need to think about whether or not you need to re-plan your route, because there may be a risk of falling rocks during rain. The weather is usually pleasant and the views are worth a safe and peaceful drive on these roads.
7. Roque Nublo: One of the highest points on the island
Going to see the one of the highest point of the island, which is located in the central municipality of Tejed, we had an unplanned visit to The Ethnographic Museum before that.
This Museo Etnográfico Casas Cuevas de Artenara is set in an old house. The employee of the museum was so nice that she suggested visiting many more beautiful places on the island, of course not to miss this one — Roque Nublo. Beside it means “Cloud Rock". The walk from the car park lot to the top was very easy and short, approximately 3 km round trip. This trail can also be done with children. Since we were at this point a little before 8 in the evening, we realised that many people visit this place to enjoy the sunset.
After that we went to the highest point of the island by car, because it was too late to go on foot. It also offers wonderful sunsets. Pico de las Nieves — it is the highest peak on the island of Gran Canaria, at 1949 meters and you can go almost to the top by car.
8. Poema del Mar Aquarium: Very close to the sharks
If it does happen to be a cloudy day in Gran Canaria or you want to hide from the sun, we recommend visiting the Poema del Mar Aquarium. It is a great place especially for families. You will definitely be more educated after visiting it, because there is a lot to see and learn about ocean animals. We were surprised by the size of the large aquariums and the variety of species. We caught the moment when one diver was feeding the small rays and the other was protecting them from the big sharks. The price is reasonable for the experience provided by the aquarium. It is a great adventure for both children and parents.
9. Playa de Puerto Rico: A typical tourist holiday destination
In our opinion, this is one of the best beaches in Grand Canary. It is a beach where people can relax, it has everything for a typical tourist vacation. There are many bars and restaurants nearby, as well as a wide choice of hotel complexes. Thanks to the sand imported from the Sahara desert, it is pleasant for children and adults who prefer sandy beaches not rocky ones. It should be mentioned that this is one of the sunniest beaches on the island.
10. Mirador del Balcón: A hidden treasure
This sight was for us one of the most important natural sights to see in Grand Canaria. This place is also known as Anden Verde or as El Paso Marinero viewpoint, were you can see the stark zigzagging cliffs ending in the sea. It is located in the Tamadaba Natural Park (a hidden treasure between Agaete and La Aldea). Remember to wear something warmer even on sunny days, as this place, also called the tail of the dragon, is often very windy.
11. Cactualdea Park: Europe's Biggest Cactus Park
If you are close to the town of La Aldela de San Nicolás, we definitely recommend visiting the Cactualdea Park. It should be emphasised that this is one of the largest open-air cactus parks in all of Europe. There are more than 1,000 different species of Cacti and plants from all over the world. The variety of cacti will amaze you in all its natural splendour and forms. Remember to apply sunscreen. In two hours, you can quickly get sunburned on this island.
